With a star-gazing synth score and dreamy black and white cinematography, Jacques Audiard’s latest explores the interwoven lives of several millennials searching for sex, love, and purpose.

The looming high rises of Paris’s 13th arrondissement cast a rare, imposing vista across the City of Light and house thousands of strangers unlikely to ever meet. In this adaptation of several stories by American graphic novelist Adrian Tomine, renowned filmmaker Jacques Audiard (Dheepan, PFF24) transfers the action of Tomine’s New York-set stories to Paris, with the towers as a backdrop. Co-written with Portrait of a Lady on Fire helmer Céline Sciamma and Léa Mysius, Audiard captures the ennui of contemporary living and the cost of sharing your soul with another. As new roommates Émilie (Lucie Zhang) and Camille (Makita Samba) quickly fall into evenings of casual sex (and maybe something more), Nora (Noémie Merlant, PFF29’s Jumbo) arrives in Paris to attend law school. A misunderstanding and cruel joke by her fellow students quickly finds Nora in the now turbulent orbit of Émilie, Camille, and a mysterious webcam model named Amber Sweet (Jehnny Beth). The four sensuous and emotionally naked performances combust with chemistry as Audiard heightens the emotions with each synth note and black and white shot creating a perfect encapsulation of the time.
