Aspiring cartoonist Rakel has her carefree life turned upside down when she finds out that she is not only pregnant, but also seven months along.
Motherhood is the last thing on the mind of 23-year-old Rakel (Kristine Kujath Thorp). Partying, drawing, and not cleaning her room are her main priorities. But when her roommate and best friend Ingrid (Tora Christine Dietrichson) notices Rakel’s heightened sense of smell and a larger chest, she supplies a pregnancy test that comes back positive. Rakel deduces that the father must be the sweet, unassuming Mos (Nader Khademi), with whom she shared a recent drug-fueled and passionate one-night stand. But after learning she is actually seven months pregnant, her world comes crashing down around her. The father? Not Mos, who has recently reappeared in Rakel’s life as a self-defense teacher and wants to take her out for coffee, but a lanky oafish man charmingly dubbed “Dick Jesus” (Arthur Berning). She begins drawing Ninjababy, the smartmouthed baby she imagines inside her (voiced by Herman Tømmeraas), who quickly takes on a life of his own, goading Rakel as he bounces from wall to wall. Director Yngvild Sve Flikke helms this fresh Norwegian comedy that is both hilarious and deeply affecting as it navigates one young woman’s struggle to find her role in the world—with or without her Ninjababy.
