ALIEN ON STAGE

Documentary 1h 24m 2021

LUCY HARVEY, DANIELLE KUMMER | UK | ENGLISH | 2021 | 84 MIN

Lights! Camera! Xenomorph! A loveable ragtag group of bus drivers from Dorset, England attempts an amateur stage adaptation of sci-fi classic Alien, chestburster and all.

In space no one may hear you scream, but they will certainly hear you bust a gut in Lucy Harvey and Danielle Kummer’s delightful and inspiring underdog documentary about a faux Nostradamus crew’s epic voyage to London’s historic West End theater district. After abandoning their usual fairytale fare and Monty Python-esque pantomime performances, the ambitious members of the non-profit Paranoid Dramatics troupe set their sights on creating a sincere, suspenseful, and special effects-laden adaptation of Ridley Scott’s Alien. Easier said than done, since a majority of the troupe are middle-aged bus drivers who don’t really care for Ripley’s cinematic exploits (or remember their lines, for that matter). But when two hip Londoners stumble upon an ill-attended opening night performance they help cultivate a rabid online fanbase, leading to an invite to perform at London’s Leicester Square Theatre for one night only. Alien on Stage is an invigorating and sympathetic look at unlikely creatives pursuing their passion—not for clicks or views, but for the love of the stage.
